5 Fun Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Home

It’s February and with St. Valentine’s Day right around the corner, that means love is in the air. Are you looking for a few ways to celebrate other than with the traditional chocolates, roses and conversation candy hearts (although who doesnt love chocolate any day)? Read on!

A traditionally social-distanced ‘holiday’ before social distancing became the norm (no one wants a crowd when you’re celebrating with that special someone), we know you’ve probably already been spending a lot of one-on-one time with your sweetie over the past year. But to make it a little extra special this February 14, when reservations at that overpriced restaurant may not be possible anyway, here are some sweet ways to say Be Mine from the comfort of your own home.

1. Have a Romantic Dinner

Did you know Valentine’s Day is also known as the St. Valentine’s Feast or Feast Day of St. Valentine? So, what better way to celebrate at home than fix a fancy – or just a favorite family or romantic meal for two. Get out of those sweats and PJ’s and make it super special by dressing up for the occasion. Set the table with your best china or Chinet paper plates. Set the mood with candlelight, paper hearts and a floral centerpiece (great way to work in the roses!). Break out the plastic or crystal wine glasses and champagne flutes. Fill them with bubbly and strawberries – or sparkling cider for the kids. Go Google some Valentine’s dinner menu ideas and bon appetite!

2. Set up a Surprise Picnic

If you don’t have time or aren’t into anything formal, keep it casual with a picnic. If you and your loved one have opposite schedules, grab a basket full of goodies and meet in the park for a cozy Valentine’s lunch. Or welcome each other home by spreading your picnic blanket in the backyard or on the rooftop (weather permitting) while sharing the sunset together. Picnic fare is a great idea, too, for cozying up on the floor in front of the fireplace while you sip and nosh the night away.

3. Enjoy a Movie Night

What better way to celebrate the celebration of love and affection than snuggled up with your honey on the couch for a Valentine-themed movie night. (There’s even room for the kids if you can’t get a sitter.) After dinner, make it a marathon with some of these Cupid-approved favorites we found (courtesy of Town&Country):

  • Pride & Prejudice (2005, have a heart, Mr. Darcy
  • The Notebook (2004, don’t forget the tissues
  • Love Story (1970, ‘cuz love means never having to say you’re sorry)
  • Romeo + Juliet (1996, well, duh
  • 10 Things I Hate About You (1999, you’ll love this one)
  • It Happened One Night (1934, swoon-worthy classic)
  • Magic Mike (2012, for the ladies celebrating their singledom)
  • Love and Basketball (2000, all’s fair in love and basketball
  • When Harry Met Sally (1989, we’ll have what she’s having)
  • Valentine’s Day (2010, <3 <3 <3

4. Go on a Scavenger Hunt

Some may think it’s hard to find true love, but you can make it easy with a Valentine scavenger hunt! There are a ‘couple’ of ways you can do one. Provide your partner (or kids) with clues to where you’ve hidden a variety of hearts – in chocolate form, homemade heart-shaped paper Valentine’s, on cute t-shirts or socks, even jewelry. Get creative! Each heart holds a clue to the next one. The hearts can be gifts in and of themselves, or tie clues to something simple like a bunch of candy hearts that express your feelings (who doesn’t love reading “You’re Hot”) or Hershey kisses for your love to collect as they lead up to their super special Valentine gift. (BTW, Valentine’s Day is the fifth most popular day to get engaged. Hint, hint.)

5. Treat Yourselves to a Spa Night

After you put the kids to bed, it’s time for just the two of you. Turn your bathroom into your own personal spa. Tell Alexa to turn on a Zen playlist while you light some scented candles and sink into a hot, relaxing bath filled with bubbles (don’t forget the other bubbly) or soothing bath salts. De-stress while pampering each other with a foot rub or even a mani/pedi (yeah, real guys love those, too). Then ‘mask up’ for a commemorative selfie of your funny valentine with your choice of his-and-hers facial masks to moisturize, exfoliate, rejuvenate and remember Valentine’s Day 2021!
