Eco-Friendly Home Essentials for 2020

It might already be the middle of January but there’s still plenty of time to decide on a worthy New Year’s resolution. This year, why not adopt a resolution that not only benefits you—it benefits the environment?  We’ve rounded up some of our favorite ways to make homes more eco-friendly in 2020 and beyond, check it out!

Eco-friendly essential: LED light bulbs

You don’t have to spend a fortune to be environmentally conscious with your home—even the bulbs you’re using can make a noticeable difference to your energy bill.

The most popular varieties of light bulbs are CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) and LEDs (light-emitting diode). Given the popularity of LEDs, many people routinely buy them when it’s time to replace the lighting in their home—others flinch at the price differential between this type and CFLs. True, LEDs are generally a little more expensive upfront BUT they last a long time and typically require less energy, saving you money in the long term.

For environmentally friendly lighting, follow this rule of thumb: when purchasing new bulbs, don’t shop price—shop energy-efficient and overall value.

Eco-friendly essential: professional insulation

Extreme seasonal temperatures are sure to put any HVAC system through its paces, driving up electric bills in the process. Insulation helps relieve some of that burden, preventing comfortable cool or warm air from seeping out of your home. In many cases, professional insulation is an eco-friendly project that will inevitably pay for itself over time through the money you save.

One of the hottest areas of the home is the attic—insulating this area is critical. Without the proper insulation, heating and moisture can run rampant in your attic and cause widespread damage to other parts of your home—some you may not necessarily see.

Another culprit for the air in your home to escape are the windows—insulation is critical in these areas. If your windows are more than 10 years old, you may want to consider replacing them near future—more modern and energy-efficient options are available.

Editor’s note: Carpet does a great job of trapping warm air. If you don’t already have carpet flooring, a great way to make the most of your heating (and add a little design flair to your home) is by adding a rug to the room.

Eco-friendly essential: smart thermostat

We love smart thermostats at Offerpad. Apart from looking sleek and modern, these attractive devices are an easy way to make your home more energy efficient and a little bit more eco-friendly.

The main perk behind a smart thermostat is the automation. Give it a few days and the device will learn household patterns and behavior—maybe you sleep a little bit cooler at night, so the thermostat automatically adjusts around that time.

If you travel a lot—or ever, really—the remote access capabilities are priceless. By syncing the thermostat up with the accompanying app, you can manually adjust the temperature of your home from virtually anywhere—this may be especially useful if you have pets in your home.

Like many of the other eco-friendly essentials listed here, this device can potentially pay for itself over time. Many smart thermostats give you the ability to review your energy usage, providing feedback on ways for you to potentially save. If you’re serious about being more eco-friendly, this smart device provides regular motivation.
